- There is ink freaking EVERYWHERE
- Recycled paper is not the best for calligraphy
- My hand hurts
Today was the first day I really dug into my 20% project. It started off by spending an agonizing amount of time at Michaels trying to figure out which calligraphy pen to by. I settled on a $9.99 dip pen and $4.99 black ink over the cartridge fountain pens. I did calligraphy for a bit in middle school with a fountain pen and I remember the cartridge pens being a pain in the butt. Plus dip pens seemed kind of awesome, like quills in Harry Potter. Then I got home and started to practice. I found some printable Copperplate guideline paper from a quick google search and used it to follow the first few tutorials on The Flourish Forum. My assessment after day 1:

Alyssa, what a great idea for your 20% project! So creative and seems like a great random skill to have! From the picture, it looks like you are pretty good at it too! Can't wait to see how your project progresses!

Why is recycled paper not the best for calligraphy? #curious

Because the nib of the pen grabs the paper fibers and gets clogged. I've had more success by switching to a higher quality glossy paper.

Cool/unique project! We learned calligraphy in our elective class in 6th grade but I couldn't tell you a thing about it. What exactly is the point of it anyway....? It's like a form of art, right? Anyway, from you picture it looks like you're off to a great start so far!
